Tenpin Bowling New Zealand Inc (“TBNZ”) is pleased to announce that subsequent to our previous announcement that on 12 January 2006 we received further correspondence from Dr Danny Santos, Secretary General of Federation Internationale Des Quilleurs (“FIQ”) advising TBNZ that the FIQ Presidium had reinstated New Zealand’s full membership to FIQ.
The FIQ Presidium reinstated TBNZ’s full membership to FIQ effective immediately on the basis that New Zealand had previously been a full member of FIQ. This means that TBNZ has full membership rights of FIQ from 1 January 2006 including membership of the World Tenpin Bowling Association (“WTBA”). Membership to the WTBA enables New Zealand teams to compete internationally at WTBA and Asian Bowling Federation (“ABF”) sanctioned Championships.

FIQ / WTBA Announcement

Tenpin Bowling New Zealand Inc (“TBNZ”) is pleased to announce that on 3 January 2006 that we received notification from Dr Danny Santos, Secretary General of Federation Internationale Des Quilleurs (“FIQ”) that the FIQ Presidium has granted TBNZ provisional membership of FIQ.

Provisional membership to FIQ means that TBNZ also becomes a provisional member of the World Tenpin Bowling Association (“WTBA”) enabling New Zealand teams to compete internationally at WTBA and Asian Bowling Federation (“ABF”) sanctioned Championships.

This is a significant step forward in regaining full international recognition of New Zealand Tenpin Bowling. The remaining step to full membership of FIQ and WTBA by TBNZ can only take place when the next full meeting of the FIQ Congress takes place which is scheduled for August 2007.

Provisional membership grants TBNZ full membership rights to FIQ and WTBA with the exception of voting rights.

Super Six Final

On the 4th of December, Panmure Superbowl in Auckland played host to the Super Six Final. Conditions proved tough for a lot of bowlers, a fact reflected in some of the averages and low games bowled over the day.

The ladies and youth top ten bowlers from throughout the year kicked the final off in the morning: nine hard-fought match play games were bowled. In the Youth Division, Scott Hooper finished on top, winning seven out of nine games plus pinfall. The top three also included Jason Moka who was closely followed by Bianca Tofila. Suzanne Howell finished on top the Ladies Division winning seven out of nine match play games plus pinfall with Serena Cox and Julianne Mollett finishing second and third respectively.

The afternoon played host to the Men’s and Senior Finals. Chan Harris finished as the top senior bowler, with Bill Hayward placing second. The top 16 men waged a tough battle in their final - after 15 match play games plus pinfall David Davies finished on top winning with a 199 average followed by James Kelly and Phil Wright.

Congratulations to all bowlers who reached the finals and of course the winners in their respective divisions. ( full results )

Have a great Christmas and New Year and cheers to 2005, roll on 2006!

Tenpin Bowling New Zealand Inc. is pleased to announce that on 31 October 2005 we received a letter from SPARC confirming their acceptance of TBNZ as the national sporting body for Tenpin Bowling in New Zealand.

This is a significant step forward in rebuilding the administration base of the sport of Tenpin Bowling in New Zealand. It is important to note that this is the first time that Tenpin Bowling has had a National Body that has been recognised by SPARC. Also on 31 October 2005 TBNZ made application to become a member of Federation Internationale Des Quilleurs (FIQ) and World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA).

This application is pending a meeting of the FIQ Presidium.

41st Qubicaamf Bowling World Cup

From November 13-20 159 contestants from 90 countries from around the globe begin their quest to find the very best bowlers in the world.

The tournament will take place in the Gladiator bowling centre a brand new 28-lane facility in Ljubljana, Solovenia. For those people who don’t know where Ljubljana, Slovenia is, it borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

The AMF World Cup is the world’s largest annual international sports championship in terms of the number of participating countries.

New Zealand has been sending representatives since 1985 and this year is no exception.

Jason Waters and Belinda Tan, both from Auckland New Zealand, will compete in this year’s World Cup representing Aotearoa. Jason and Belinda earned the right to represent New Zealand after winning the NZ round of the World Cup Masters held in Auckland earlier this year ( see tournament results ).

We all wish them the very best. You can follow their progress on the link below:

Australian Nationals and Masters

Gold for Graeme Finn and Jason Waters in the Men’s Open Doubles was the New Zealand team highlight from participation in the recently concluded Australian Nationals. Bowling a combined score of 1424 Finn (732) and Waters (692) both also qualified for the Australian Masters where Finn bowed out in the first round to eventual winner Ash Riley of Tasmania. Waters won his first round match against Queenslander Sam Nucifora, and followed that up with a convincing 3-0 victory against Albert Mazzoni of Queensland before losing in the quarterfinals.

The New Zealand women’s team of Julieanne Mollet, Ivena Heald, Lesley Potter, Dianne Robinson and Amanda Kebblewhite won silver in the women’s open teams with a score of 2889 (ave. 192.6) 102 pins behind the winning Queensland team.
Ivena Heald, our 2005 New Zealand Women’s Champion made it through to the second round of 16 before losing to Debbie Riley of Tasmania.

Rachuig Review

The New Zealand men’s team improved on their 2004 effort to finish in fourth placing agonisingly a half point from third a bronze medal. Highlights were a 6-1 win over second placed Northern Territory and 5-2 win over third placed Victoria. It was a disappointment that our first day leading bowler Bryce Andrews developed health problems on Day 2 and could only bowl 3 games while Jason Waters was injured late on Day 2 and could not bowl on the final day. Overall it was a pleasing result but we were able to look back on many opportunities to have gained further points over the 18 games that were not taken.

The New Zealand women’s team finished in seventh place this year a couple of places below last year. While they gained victories over each of the top three placed teams the competition was tough with, for example the three teams opposing them on the afternoon of Day 3 bowling a combined average of 215 against them. Again points opportunities were not finished off and the importance of making spares was emphasised to both teams.

Overall the team was placed 6th and more experienced gained in a wonderfully tough teams competition.

RACHUIG TEAM

The New Zealand Tenpin Bowling Team is traveling to Sydney on Saturday October 29 to compete in the Australian Inter-State Championships (Walter Rachuig Trophy). This event is to be played over three days being 3 - 5 November and is preceded by the Australian Nationals from 30 October to 2 November in which the members of the team are also competing in as a warm up to the main event.

The team is as follows:

Men: Craig Nevatt (Captain), Jason Waters, David Davies, James Kelly, Bryce Andrews (Auckland), Chris Haynes and Graeme Finn (Wellington).
Ladies: Ivena Heald (Wellington, Captain), Julieanne Mollet, Amanda Kebblewhite, Jennifer Edwards, (Auckland), Lesley Potter, Alison Hayward (Tauranga), and Dianne Robinson (Rotorua)

The team is coached by Barry Lynch and Vic Potter, and managed by Stephen Penney.

The Walter Rachuig Trophy consists of six games each day playing each of the nine other teams twice and is both mentally and physically a tough three days. Every game is tight and each team is capable of beating the other in any game. The New Zealand team has trained hard throughout the year with this event in mind and is hopeful of achieving New Zealand’s best result in the tournament following last years excellent fourth placing.

You can follow the teams progress at both the Australian Nationals and Walter Rachuig Trophy on the Tenpin Bowling Australia website www.tenpin.org.au

SYDNEY TOURNAMENT – FEEDBACK FROM BIANCA TOFILAU

There were 35 girls competing in the competition and I was the only New Zealand female in there.I qualified to compete in the master’s competition coming 7th with a 177 average.
Masters.
After the 9th game of the master’s, I was coming 2nd but this was then followed by some bad games and finished 13th ending with a 170 average.

The experience I have gained from this was immeasurable from the exposure to other bowling techniques and from the participation in an overseas competition. A usual tournament in New Zealand Youth equates to 19 games but in the Sydney competition, there were a total of 31 games. This was evident in my last few games of the Master’s competition were I was physically & mentally fatigued and hence my game fell considerably.

I would have loved to have had other Kiwi Juniors with me and feel it would have enhanced the experience for me. I would like the New Zealand Ten Pin Bowling Association to consider including this valuable competition as part of their selection. The Australian Youth and coaches etc. were all extremely friendly and made me feel so welcome. It would be great to share this experience with my Kiwi Junior Squad.

Junior / Youth National Championships - National Youth Team Championships

The Junior/Youth National Championships and National Youth Team Championships were held between 27 September and 1 October in Rotorua.

Both tournaments were enjoyed by all with high expectations that next years tournaments will be bigger and better. These tournaments are the breeding ground for New Zealand’s next generation of top bowlers. There are always bowlers in these types of tournaments that stand out and this year proved that with the achievements of the female youth bowler Suzanne Howell of Auckland.

21 year old Suzanne collected an incredible 7 gold medals from these tournaments. This was achieved through winning every event in the Nationals being singles, doubles, teams, all events and the masters. Suzanne then led the Auckland team to victory in the Team Championships and was highest individual female performer in this tournament as well. Suzanne also won Sportsperson of the tournament as voted by the bowlers.

The 2005 PSB Proshop Champions League’s final round came to an exciting end this past Tuesday for David Davies as en-route to winning the Championship he rolled his 5th ever perfect game. The PSB Proshop Champions League was an all new league for 2005 designed to test Auckland’s top Bowlers. The league featured 6 rounds of competition using competitive oil patterns as used in major Tournaments from around the world which makes this 300 game something extra special for Davies whose last 300 game came in the 2003 NSW Open in Sydney. The 300 Game was only the 2nd perfect game bowled at Panmure Superbowl, Davies also holds the record for the most 300 games by any New Zealander.

As the Sponsor for the League, PSB Proshop presented Davies with a Bowling Ball of his choice for his fine achievement. Congratulations David.

Bowler achieves 803 three game series.
David Brown of Waitakere writes himself into the history books when on Tues the 20th of Sept 2005 bowled a 803 series over 3 three games at Tenpin Lincoln Road.
He achieved this in the flexi singles league where he was bowling by himself. This was the first 800 series bowled at Tenpin Lincoln Road. There has been only a hand full of 800 series bowled in New Zealand an achievement that David can be very proud of. David’s recent achievements included being runner up in the 2005 AMF NZ World cup-qualifying masters. His scores included a 299 game where the 4 pin refused to go over, they were 268-236-299. Congratulations David.

There was one competitor from New Zealand, representing Waitakre, and unoffically New Zealand, Ross Fulton.

He was entered into the Singles, scratch and doubles, paired with a South Australian bowler for the Doubles, and was entered for All Events contention, bowling in mock-up teams for the Triples and Fours.

Placing in 5 of his 6 events entered, he placed 2nd in Scratch Singles, 3rd in Handicap Singles, 3rd in Scratch Doubles, and 2nd in Handicap Doubles.

His highest game was a 232 (Highest game for his sight category, B2) and his highest series was a 556.

July 2005

Gregs 300 Game was bowled in the Bowland Porirua Super Singles League played on Sunday the 24th July 2005 at 5.30pm. Exactly 3 months to the day – the last 300 game was bowled by his long time friend Rey Non.

And guess who his opponent was……….Yep you got it right it was Hamish McGrigor.

Going strike for strike in the 5th game they both had a 6 bagger, the pace was pretty hectic with the league watching in anticipation – the excitement was there and the drama started to unfold when Greg paced ahead but a shaky strike in the 9th frame nearly undid him then another shaky one in the 11th frame had the spectators holding their breath – but a solid strike for the last – had him grinning from ear to ear and he let out a sigh of relief. He knew he had done it – bowled that elusive game that is like a dream to some – except those that strive to become better bowlers like he has done in the past year.
A well deserved 2 point win Greg
A well deserved 300 game and place of honour with the rest of the NZ “300” Bowlers

Greg is a 2005 Wellington Representative and is a strong contender for the 2006 Wellington Mens Team. We will be seeing more good stuff from him in the future.

June 2005

National Youth Squad member Patrick Chan achieves another of his goals by becoming Men's National Champion for 2005.

At the recent Tenpin Bowling New Zealand Championships in Tauranga, Patrick placed 3rd in the Singles event with a pinfall of 1266, a 211 average.

In the Doubles, partnered with Shane Mahoni, Patrick bowled 713 an average of 237 to win first place. Together with Phil Wright, Craig Nevatt, Jason Waters and his brother Perry, Patrick also gained first place in the Teams event with a 213 average.

Combining these scores, Patrick placed first in the All Events with a total of 2619 at an average of 218 pins per game. On the final day of matchplay, Patrick continued with his fine form to win 11 games and lose only 4, with some tough competition from National Squad members Craig Nevatt and David Davies.

After an outstanding weekend of bowling Patrick won the title of Men's Open Class National Champion for 2005, and with it gaining a place in the NZ Team to compete in the Walter Rachuig Trophy to be held at Illawara Strikezone, Sydney in November and also automatic entry into the Australian Masters Tournament

June 2005
David Davies Third at Melbourne Tenpin Cup

New Zealand Squad member, David Davies bowled an average of 233 over sixteen games to quality in second place for the match play finals at the Melbourne Tenpin Cup played 11 to 13 June.

The match play section was played in a new format of three to a pair with bonus points for the first and second placed in each group of three. The first match play section was seven games before a further cut to top 15 and another 8 match play games to determine final tournament placing.

Having bowled brilliantly to qualify, David held his form continuing on with a match play average of 218 over the fifteen games played to finish with an overall tournament average of 225.4 over 31 games and third place.

The tournament winner was the Northern Territory left hander Andrew McArthur and Australian Champion Jason Belmonte placed second. Fourth placed was left hander George Frilingos, recent winner of the Enduro 88 in Christchurch.

David's result is without doubt the best overseas effort by a New Zealand bowler in ten years and just reward for his dedication to the game.

New Zealand Squad coach, Barry Lynch said that "David has worked very hard on refining his technique over the past two years and there have been times when his results have suffered as a consequence, but his commitment to the honing of technique has now provided him with a thoroughly deserved result which should give all New Zealand bowlers confidence"
