New Zealand team comes within three points of winning the 2006 Walter Rachuig Trophy.

AMF Moonah, Hobart, was the host for this years 2006 Walter Rachuig Trophy and the Australian Nationals. The New Zealand Team travelled across the ditch to compete against 9 other Australian Teams in the prestigious Walter Rachuig Trophy Tournament.

After 3 days of intense competition the New Zealand womens team finished 2nd only 2 points behind the New South Wales ladies the highest position for a New Zealand team since we have been competing at Rachuig. The mens team ended up in 5th place only one point from out right 3rd place. The New Zealand mens team needed just 3 more points over the three days of competition for New Zealand to win over all.

This is the closest that the New Zealand team has been to winning the Walter Rachuig Trophy off the Australians. As the manager of the New Zealand team this competition proved that we have the ability to match it with the Australians and win this particular tournament out right. It also shows that as a team we should take responsibility for our actions on and off the lanes through dedicated practice, national pride and TEAM work.
Congratulations to the womens team and well done to all involved and bring on next year.

Also while in Hobart the NZ team competed in the Australian Nationals involving teams, doubles and singles events. David Davies finished on top and won the mens open singles and an unprecedented ten bowlers qualified for the Australian open masters.
Dianne Robinson from Christchurch cleaned up the top seeds in the ladies division and bowled her way to the grand final another first for New Zealand. Dianne gave it her all and was eventually beaten by her opponent three games to one, well done Dianne.

Men’s World Championships, Busan, Korea, 26 Aug to Sept 9 2006.

Hi All,

In the trios, the guys found the transition from the long oil to the short oil very tough, as the lanes dried out extremely quick. Craig and Robbie are adjusting accordingly and shooting well. The whole team bowled well on the long oil on the 2nd day, but the air-conditioning broke down in the centre which made it extremely hot.

In the teams yesterday everybody bowled well on the long oil, setting us up for the short oil today from 12pm NZ time.

In the Singles on Wednesday and Thursday we have bowlers in the following squads (all times are NZ time)

Wednesday, 12pm and 4.30pm, 2 bowlers each Thursday, 4.30pm. 2 bowlers.

The lineups for these squads are yet to be confirmed.

The masters on Friday is the last event, followed by the banquet. We fly out of Busan at 8.45am Saturday local time, which makes for a very early wakeup call after the banquet.

Hi All,

After a very long long 17 hour plane trip we all arrived safely with all luggage intact and we got away without being charged for excess baggage, we were 20 kilos over.

A few of the boys are suffering from swollen fingers due to the long flight and hot humid weather here. It has been 25-30 degrees and about 70% humidity.

In the doubles squads over the last 2 days all bowlers have bowled their entering averages or above so I am pleased with that given the fact that for some of them its their first overseas tournament. All 3 doubles combos struggled in the last game due to drastic changes in lane conditions on the long oil pattern.

On the long oil the conditions are good for first 3 games and start to breakdown after that. Jason and Craig had to bowl on standby lanes during the last game as their last pair broke down. They had to bowl on 1&2 where they found the conditions VERY sub standard and very unpredictable - hence the low scores.

The calibre of bowlers here is extremely high and very competitive. Some of our bowlers have a few nerves but all in all they are handling it well. Most mornings we have a 5.45am wake up call, breakfast is at 6.30 am and we're on the the bus at 7.30am to go to bowling centre. Communicating with the locals has been a test and making sure we get the right food whilst eating out every day is also a challenge.

The Trios lineups for Sat and Sun are as follows (all times are NZ time):

Block 1 - Short Oil
Sat 12pm Robbie, Tony, Fred.
Sat 3.45pm Jason, James, Craig.

Block 2 - Long Oil
Sun 12pm Jason, James, Craig.
Sun 7.30pm Robbie, Tony, Fred.

2006 QubicaAMF World Cup Qualifying.

Jason Waters successfully defends his 2005 title at New Zealands World Cup Qualifying Round.

Tenpin Lincoln Road, Auckland played host to the 2006 QubicaAMF World Cup NZ Qualifying Round over the weekend of August 5-6. Saturday was stage 1 where 32 bowlers bowled three blocks of six games on three different conditions to find the top 12 bowlers to contest stage 2 on Sunday.

After the first 6 games David Brown finished on top with a 227 average followed by Jason Waters 218 ave and David Davies 213 ave respectively. The next block of six games Craig Nevatt bowled a personal best and blitzed the field with a stunning 244 ave finishing on top with David Brown and David Davies 2nd and 3rd respectively. The third block of six games was nothing short of spectacular bowling with Craig Nevatt bowling a 247 average and finishing on top 244 pins clear of 2nd place David Brown and David Davies.
Also in the third block Adrian Judd bowled a perfect 300 game.

Sunday was stage two with the top 12 bowlers from the day before playing 11 games head to head with carried over pinfall.
Defending Champion Jason Waters finished on top followed by Craig Nevatt, David Davies and Clinton Beacham respectively.

This set up an impressive stepladder final where bowlers played the best of three games against each other. First up was Clinton Beacham who qualified 4th playing 3rd place David Davies. Clinton prevailed winning 2 games where he went on to play 2nd placed bowler Craig Nevatt. Craig won the first two games, which set up a nail biting grand final against the defending champion Jason Waters.

The final went to 3 games where Craig Nevatt won 2 out of three games. As the highest qualifier Jason Waters had the right to re-challenge and so it carried on into another 3 games. Jason won the first game 227 to 221. In the second game Jason seemed to struggle bowling a 154 to Craigs 217. The last game to decide the winner was a frame by frame nail biter with the lead changing constantly. It came down to the last two frames where Jason Waters put a string of strikes together to prevail over Craig 192 to 184.

In the women’s decider Suzanne Howell held her own to the last game to become the women’s representative for New Zealand at this years World cup. In other results Sonny Reguerra took out the plate final with Suzanne Howell and Gregorio Nicolas finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Both Jason and Suzanne will travel to Caracas Venezuela to represent New Zealand in the 2006 QubicaAMF World Cup November 4-10 this year.

Final Day – MASTERS GOLD for Banks
and Frilingos at III Commonwealth
Tenpin Bowling Championship

An exuberant crowd of locals and overseas visitors cheered Australia’s George Frilingos and England’s Fiona Banks to victory in the final matches of the Masters Stepladder final at OzTenpin Bowl in Melbourne this afternoon.

Top seed Frilingos recovered from a 41 pin deficit in the first of the 2-game final to take the coveted Masters Gold by a slim 2 pin margin, (170-211, and 208-165) from Mohd Noer Said from Malaysia. Mohd Noer Said advanced to the final after defeating Jon Zadel from England 223-186 after Zadel uncharacteristically opened in two frames in the single-game Semi-final.

On the adjoining lanes, the first match of the Women’s stepladder final saw Canada’s Jennifer Willis-Park eliminate Australia’s Ann Maree Putney in a close game, 213-210 to then face an in-form Fiona Banks from England in the 2-game final. The plucky Canadian established a 3 pin lead after both bowlers opened frames in the first game, but Fiona Banks closed the gap to clinch the Gold medal, 199-202 and 233-222.

A colourful closing ceremony and trophy presentation acknowledged the All-Events winners – Australia’s Ann Maree Putney from Newcastle and Dominic Barrett from Essex in England. The TRIPLE DIAMOND PERPETUAL TROPHY, denoting the three Zones of the sport encompassed by the Commonwealth, was then presented to the inaugural Award winner, Team Australia, on behalf of donor, the Australian Diamond Company.

The ceremony culminated with a march-out of the Men’s and Women’s Masters medal-winners and their Coaches, with Commonwealth Games Federation CEO, Michael Hooper presenting the CGF-endorsed medals, assisted by TBA Director, Kathy Smith. Prior to presenting the Masters Championship medals, Michael Hooper addressed competitors and officials, commending the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Federation for staging its third successful Championship and encouraging its members to enlarge the circle of participating countries as widely as possible in future Championships.

KIWIS IN THE MASTERS AT THE COMMONWEALTH CHAMPS

The great bowling is continuing from the Kiwis at the Commonwealth Champs in
Melbourne, Jason Waters and Ivena Heald both qualified for the masters, and
Craig Nevatt and Julieanne Mollet both missed out by only one spot.

In the Masters, Ivena finished a credible 10th place. But Jason pulled out
a huge effort on the 2nd day to miss the cut for the top 3 stepladder final
by only 12 pins. Jason's 4th place is the best effort by a kiwi bowler at a
world tournament for many years. Well done Jason, superb stuff.

KIWIS CONTINUE TO FLY AT COMMONWEALTH CHAMPS

The great bowling is continuing from the Kiwis at the Commonwealth Champs in Melbourne, Jason Waters and Ivena Heald both qualified for the masters, and Craig Nevatt and Julieanne Mollet both missed out by only one spot. After 6 games of the masters yesterday, Jason and Ivena are both placed 7th in their respective events. After todays final 6 games, the top 3 in each event go through to the stepladder final. A special highlight yesterday was Jason's 278 game, equalling the tournament's highest game to date. Well done all, and keep up the great bowling today.

3rd Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championship.

Craig Nevatt and Jason Waters finish strong to beat 12 other countries in the men’s doubles at the Commonwealth Tenpin Bowling Championships.

Currently ranked 1 and 2 respectively in New Zealand, Craig and Jason took out the bronze medal in the men’s doubles event at the Commonwealth Championships. They tied for third place with England’s Dominic Barrett who is seeded number 1 in the competition and Jon Zadel.

Craig and Jason had a slow start to the doubles competition but soon found their mark on the short oil conditions and finished on a combined Ave of 205.3 to take the third spot. Malaysia finished on top followed by Australia less than 80 pins in front of both New Zealand and England.

This is one of New Zealands best finish in an event on the world stage of Tenpin Bowling its a finish that considering the competition Craig and Jason should be proud of.

Easter Weekend
2006 National Teams Championship - Adult

A tied points table after more than 1500 games forced a sudden death game to decide the National Team Champions.

For the first time in the Team Championships history in New Zealand, two teams drew in the overall standings at the 2006 TBNZ National Team Championships held in Tauranga over Easter weekend.

Super Six Final

On the 4th of December, Panmure Superbowl in Auckland played host to the Super Six Final. Conditions proved tough for a lot of bowlers, a fact reflected in some of the averages and low games bowled over the day.

The ladies and youth top ten bowlers from throughout the year kicked the final off in the morning: nine hard-fought match play games were bowled. In the Youth Division, Scott Hooper finished on top, winning seven out of nine games plus pinfall. The top three also included Jason Moka who was closely followed by Bianca Tofila. Suzanne Howell finished on top the Ladies Division winning seven out of nine match play games plus pinfall with Serena Cox and Julianne Mollett finishing second and third respectively.

The afternoon played host to the Men’s and Senior Finals. Chan Harris finished as the top senior bowler, with Bill Hayward placing second. The top 16 men waged a tough battle in their final - after 15 match play games plus pinfall David Davies finished on top winning with a 199 average followed by James Kelly and Phil Wright.

Congratulations to all bowlers who reached the finals and of course the winners in their respective divisions. ( full results )
