Tenpin Lincoln Road hosts the 2007 National Bowling Tour Grand Final.

40 bowlers contested the grand final to find the 2007 National Bowling Tour Champion. The new format, with handicaps, allowed all divisions to bowl together to find the overall champion.

The conditions proved to be very challenging for all bowlers, this evened the field considerably with aves ranging from 150-190. After 4 rounds of bowling the field was narrowed down to just three bowlers, Jason Waters, Clinton Beacham and John Bloomfield. John progressed directly to the final after finishing the highest qualifier from round four, this left Jason and Clinton to fight it out for the right to play John in the final.

Jason and Clinton went toe to toe until the 7th frame with Jason finally pulling away from Clinton, eventually winning 200 to 177. Then came the final between the two sponsors of the Columbia National Bowling Tour, Jason Waters and John Bloomfield. The final proved to be a low scoring affair with the left handed John Bloomfield winning the Grand Final 182-150.

After 4 rounds of bowling in a head to head match play format, only 3 bowlers remained to contest the stepladder final. David Davies and Brodie Hunt bowled first to decide who was going to bowl against number one seed Anthony Harris.

2007 Canterbury Open

The 2007 Canterbury Open was held at Garden City Bowl in Christchurch from November 16-18, and was the first tournament held in the South Island where a world class standard Kegel lane machine was used. With bowlers coming from all parts of the country from Whangaparaoa to Invercargill and the use of an oil pattern that was conducive to high scoring, some very exciting bowling was witnessed.

Some highlights of the tournament were as follows:
- Fayne Robinson’s 299 game in the Doubles, where a stubborn 7 pin refused to fall on the last shot to deny him the perfect 300. Fayne also bowled a 779 series for 3 games, which is an average of 259.66.
- Graham Dyer’s 1402 series for 6 games in the singles, an average of 234.
- Anthony Harris, Scott Hooper, Brodie Hunt and David Davies bowling a combined total of 2575 (overall average 214) in the teams, and winning by 291 pins.
- Kurt Sturgess vs. Hayden Bool in game 8 of the men’s masters. Kurt won this very exciting match 247-246, and went on to win the masters with a 225 average for 9 games.

2007 National Youth Teams Championships.

Following the Junior/Youth Nationals, 8 Teams converged on Whangaparaoa to contest the National Youth Team Championships. With Auckland successfully winning the title for the last two years, the competition was fierce to take the title off them in 2007.
After the first 4 games Auckland held a commanding lead, however, by the end of day one Aucklands lead was chased down by Rotovegas both sitting on 41 points with North Harbour close behind.
The second and final day proved to be very demanding on all bowlers with Auckland slowly but surely moving ahead of the rest of the field where they remained until the last game, winning the 2007 Title for the third consecutive year. North Harbour bowled well on day two to take out second place ahead of Rotovegas and Lincoln Road, who tied for third. Results

Wayne Booth Awards Co-ordinator

ANTI-DOPING
The Board believes that the current TBNZ Executive has brought about significant advances to our chosen sport. One example is that various age level TBNZ teams now participate in TBA annual tournaments. The Board considers the continuation of this participation to be a fundamental component of the continued growth of tenpin in New Zealand. With this in mind, the Board is keen to limit any threat to our continued involvement in these TBA tournaments.
The most obvious threat is a positive drug test. You are probably aware of recent reports of drug use in other sports. The Board considers that the likelihood of testing in Australian tournaments has only increased by these recent events. The Board wishes to make it clear that the use of unapproved drugs will not be tolerated by TBNZ at any time. TBNZ now wishes to be more proactive to ensure that all TBNZ athletes strictly adhere to the latest anti-doping rules. In other words, we want to know our athletes are drug free, so that we are not concerned about any testing that may or may not occur in Australia.
Normally the Board would again rely on the TBNZ hard working Executive to bring about this new proactive approach to anti-doping. However, as several members of our Executive are involved at this level of bowling in some way or other, the Board has decided to become directly involved in this new initiative. This action should not be interpreted as the Board having any doubt on any member’s of the Executive drug-free status, but rather to ensure that the activity is truly separate from anyone involved in national squads or teams.
The Board has therefore appointed Graham Parkins to the task of, “Aligning TBNZ with the 1st July 2007 SPARC anti-doping rules”. The Board asks you to support Graham as he goes about ensuring TBNZ athletes are drug free.
If you have any contribution to make to improve our drug free status, please contact graham@tbnz.co.nz

COLUMBIA 300 NATIONAL BOWLING TOUR - STOP 4 - TAURANGA
It was Tauranga’s turn to host stop 4 of the Columbia National Bowling Tour August 17-19.
Lane conditions were conducive to some spectacular bowling the best seen here in New Zealand in recent years.
Both the men’s and senior’s divisions required a 200 ave to qualify for the masters. In the seniors division the top qualifier was Phil Wright with a 238 ave while in the men’s division Jason Waters took out the top seed spot with a 225 ave. The women’s division produced a 207 ave as the top qualifying score, bowled by Sharon Pinker and not to be out done youth bowler Ethan McKay bowled a 213 ave to finish on top in his division.
If the qualifying was anything to go by, bowlers and spectators could expect the same and more the next day and they were not disappointed. It was only a matter of time before a 300 game was bowled, with a number of 270 and 280 games coming close. This happened on the Sunday in the men’s masters when Adrian Judd bowled 19 strikes in a row, 12 of them in one game, against his opponent Craig Nevatt who also bowled an impressive 257 game.
The masters for all divisions produced some great bowling with the winners not finalised until the last game. Graham Parkins took out the seniors ahead of top qualifier Phil Wright, while in the youth division Corey Johnson finished on top ahead of Adrian Hoggard.
Tanya Allardyce took out the women’s division winning 8 out of her 9 matches and finishing on a 203 ave ahead of the previous days top qualifier Sharon Pinker.
The men’s division produced some spectacular bowling with the winner not decided until the last few frames of the last game with David Brown finishing on top just 11 pins ahead of David Davies. See full results:   view

Lane Certification Course
TBNZ is attempting to increase the number of qualified lane inspectors that we have in New Zealand. TBNZ currently has 5 active inspectors throughout the country and is looking to increase that number to around 12. TBNZ would like these 12 inspectors spread evenly throughout the country to enable us to have locally based inspectors undertaking most of the annual
certification process rather than having to fly inspectors around the country.
Should TBNZ achieve its goal of having approximately 12 inspectors then most inspectors would only need to be available to inspect 2 or 3 centres per annum. A normal inspection takes approximately half a day plus any rechecking that might be required after adjustments have been made.
Therefore the total commitment per inspector would be approximately 2 or 3 weekends per annum.
To achieve our goal TBNZ is running a lane certification course. The course is to be run by Chris Usher and will be an international recognised qualification. More information can be found on the flyer and application form below.
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Craig Nevatt (craig@tbnz.co.nz).

Columbia 300 Tour Stop 2

Tenpin Lincoln Road was the venue for the second stop for the Columbia 300 National Bowling Tour. Bowlers found the conditions challenging and needed to adapt and adjust quickly to the lanes to prevail and move onto the Masters on Sunday.

Those few who did the Masters proved to be just as tough, reflected in the fact that only one bowler held onto a 200 ave in the match play format.

Chan Harris held on to take out the Seniors division ahead of Michael Raynard and Rob Pollock. In the Youth division it was a very close finish between Corey Johnson and Paul Housham, Corey in the end etched out Paul by just 6 pins to win.

In the ladies division, 17-year-old youth bowler Bianca Tofilau finished on top, ahead of Melonie Lister and Ellen Slater- a reflection that Bianca has a great future in front of her in New Zealand Tenpin Bowling.

The Mens division proved to be interesting, with some bowlers really struggling under the conditions. In the end Sonny Reguerra kept his composure to win ahead of Adrian Judd and Craig Nevatt.

Asian Zone Youth Championships Announcement
The TBNZ Management Team with input from the New Zealand Junior / Youth Squad Coach, Ricco Panapassa and Manager, Mike Simmons, have decided, regretfully that New Zealand will not be sending a Team to the 2007 Asian Zone Youth Championships to be held in Beijing, China. Whilst the New Zealand team who competed at the recent Australian Youth Challenge produced some credible performances it is felt that the bulk of the New Zealand Junior / Youth Squad need to focus on developing their game before attending a Championship of this magnitude.

A plan is being developed to assist the current members of the New Zealand Junior / Youth Squad to improve their skill level through attendance at training camps, competing in National Tournaments, and attendance at Australian Youth Tournaments. The squads primary focus will be to prepare a New Zealand Youth team to compete in the Australian Youth Challenge to be held in January 2008 with an eye on the 2008 WTBA World Youth Championships to be held in July, Orlando, Florida,USA, should sufficient squad members achieve the required performance levels in Australia.

The Shoe Fresh Brand Owners, John and Cushla Bloomfield wish to announce that for all future rounds of the Columbia 300 National Bowling Tour, the 300 Game Award, or if not struck the High Game Award will be presented on Sunday morning between the Ladies / Youth Masters and Mens / Senior Masters. If the Winner of the specific award is not in attendance, the award will be presented at the following round. The host centre will endeavour to inform the winner before Sunday morning's presentation time.

2007 NZ World Cup

International finals - Russia 3-11 November

After 138 attempts to try to qualify for the New Zealand final of the Bowling World Cup the top 24 bowlers embarked on a journey to find the top male and female bowler to represent New Zealand at this years World Cup finals being held in St Petersburg, Russia, Nov 3-11.

Held over two days the New Zealand final proved to be a spectator’s dream with some great bowling witnessed by all. On the first day the 24 qualifiers bowled 2 blocks of 8 games both on two different conditions to find the 16 finalists for the masters to be held on the second day.

Last year’s runner up and winner Craig Nevatt and Jason Waters finished on top respectively with young Malaysian bowler Eric Ang coming in third. Julieanne Mollet was the only female bowler who made it through to the masters with an impressive 198 ave thus becoming New Zealand’s female representative at this years World Cup final.

The second day proved to be a nail biter with 4 bowlers fighting it out in the last 3 games for the title. However before the last game was bowled it was clear that Eric Ang had enough pinfall and bonus points to win the overall title but as he is not a New Zealand citizen the fight for second spot was the most important one to find New Zealand’s male representative. It eventually came down to last years winner and runner up, Jason Waters and Craig Nevatt along with Adrian Judd breathing down their necks.

Jason Waters prevailed in the end taking out second spot and becoming New Zealand’s mens representative at this years World Cup final for the third year in a row. Well done and congratulations to both Julieanne Mollet and Jason Waters.

Columbia 300 National Bowling Tour- Round one Manukau

Manukau Superstrike was the venue for round one of the newly formatted Columbia 300 National Bowling Tour. The new format consists of 6 games of qualifying with the ability of multiple attempts. With mixed reaction through out the bowlers the weekend was a success with over118 entries in total.

Challenging conditions put most bowlers to the test over the three day tournament, this was reflected in the amount of multiple attempts in the qualifying rounds. In most of the divisional finals the difference between first and second was less then 22 pins, which showed how competitive the conditions were.

Jason Moka in the youth division carried on from his number one qualifying spot to finish ahead of Corey Johnson and Paul Housham. In the seniors division Bill Hayward held off a challenge from Graham Parkins finishing just 22 pins ahead of Graham with Stu Turnball coming in third.

The Ladies division finished on a cliffhanger with Sharon Pinker winning the final by only 4 pins ahead of Melonie Lister, Ellen Slater came in third.

Eric Ang a young bowler from Malaysia who was part of the Malaysian Youth Squad back in his home country finished on top of the qualifying round in the mens division.

He went on to win the mens masters on Sunday holding off strong challengers from both Gregorio Nicolas and Craig Nevatt who finished second and third respectively.
