National Bowling Tour Stop – 8

Tenpin RotoVegas was the venue for the last stop of the National Bowling Tour over the weekend of November 27-29. Lane conditions all weekend were tough with nobody bowling over the card but having said that, it was the same for everybody so adapting to them and spare shooting was the call for the weekend.

Craig Nevatt, Sharon Pinker, Phil Wright and Laura Sinclair were the top qualifiers in their respective divisions.

The men kicked off the masters on Sunday morning where fresh off the plane and world cup representative Sonny Reguerra won the men’s division ahead of Pete Richardson and Clinton Beacham.

Next up were the women and senior divisions and both Sharon Pinker and Phil Wright dominated the field, winning the masters.

The youth division was up next with top qualifier Laura Sinclair taking out the title ahead of William Wells and Matt Willemse.

The Grand final will take place at AMF Panmure December 13th.

Tenpin Takapuna was the venue for the 7th stop for the National Bowling tour. Over 70 Bowlers from all parts of the country participated in the tournament. 2009 TBNZ National Youth Teams Champs

The 2009 TBNZ National Youth Teams Champs were held at Tenpin Rotovegas in Rotorua from October 1-2, with teams from North Harbour, Westgate, Lincoln Road, Wellington and 2 teams from Rotorua, as well as a makeup team from West Auckland and a North Island Selection team. The scene had been set for this tournament by the results from the Junior/Youth Champs held immediately prior to this tournament, with the bowlers from the Rotorua and Lincoln Road teams establishing some intense rivalries. Team Lincoln from Lincoln Rd were the defending champs from last year, and were out to make it back to back titles.

These rivalries came to the fore on day 1 of the Teams tournament, with both Rotorua teams getting some excellent results. The Rotovegas Rebels were leading after day 1 on 44 points, with Team Lincoln only half a point back in 2nd. The Rotovegas Rascals were in 3rd place on 34.5 points, with North Harbour only half a point back in 4th.

On Day 2, the Rotovegas Rebels came up against a red hot Team Lincoln in the first game, who showed their experience in winning 7 points to 1. This proved to be the key result as Team Lincoln took lots of confidence from this win and never looked back, and the Rotovegas Rebels struggled to recapture their form from day 1 for the remainder of the day. North Harbour stole a surprise win over Team Lincoln in game 12 which enabled them to finish on 77 points, 2nd overall behind Team Lincoln on 83.5 points, with the Rotovegas Rebels finishing 3rd on 72 points and the Rascals finishing 4th on 63 points.

The AllStars races were won by Perry Chan from Team Lincoln and Laura Sinclair from Team Westgate, with Bianca Tofilau and Angela Boswell taking out the minor placings in the Girls AllStars and Blake Brooks from the Rotovegas Rebels and William Wells from Team West finishing 2nd & 3rd in the Boys AllStars.

Like the Junior/Youth Champs, the National Youth Teams Champs was conducted in excellent spirit by all bowlers, and everybody enjoyed the intense competition immensely. Bowlers are now looking forward to the next National Youth Teams Champs, to be held at Tenpin Takapuna in Auckland from October 7-9, 2010.

Full results from this year’s tournament can be found here.

2009 TBNZ Junior/Youth Champs

The 2009 TBNZ Junior/Youth Champs were held at Tenpin Rotovegas in Rotorua from September 28-30. Prior to the tournament there was some apprehension about how the lanes were going to play, due to the venue’s history of less than ideal lane conditions. But it soon proved that this fear was misplaced, as the work done on the lanes prior to the tournament to bring them up to standard ensured that the conditions were fair to all, and some excellent bowling was witnessed.

In the Junior Boys Singles, young local bowler Blake Brooks powered away to a 1249 series (208 average), winning ahead of Paul Housham from Auckland and Mat Willemse from Waitakere. Angela Boswell from New Plymouth bowled a 1208 series (201 average) to win the Junior Girls Singles, prevailing over long time rival Stephanie George from Porirua and younger sister Rachel Boswell. Angela Boswell won the Junior Girls All Events with a pinfall of 2224 (185 average) ahead of Stephanie George and Samantha McKay, whilst Bianca Tofilau took out the Youth Girls All Events with a total pinfall of 2167 (180 average) ahead of Angela Boswell and Stephanie George. Shinae King won the Junior Graded All Events with a total pinfall of 2643 (220 average including handicap) ahead of Casey Hodgkinson and Teahu Mallon.

Paul Housham won the Junior Boys Masters ahead of Blake Brooks and Ryan Borthwick. Paul Housham also won the Junior Boys National Champion title ahead of Blake Brooks and William Wells. Angela Boswell continued her dominance of the Junior Girls division, winning the Masters ahead of Samantha McKay and Stephanie George. Angela also won the Junior Girls National Champion title, ahead of Stephanie and Samantha. Monica Sopi won the Junior Graded Masters and the Junior Graded National Champion title, in both cases ahead of Navarone Hamilton and Teahu Mallon.

In the Youth Boys Masters, Brent Brooks prevailed over younger brother Blake and Corey Johnson, but Blake stayed close enough to take out the Youth Boys National Champion title ahead of Brent and Corey. In the Youth Girls Masters, Bianca Tofilau showed why she is the best youth female bowler in New Zealand, winning ahead of Laura Sinclair from Waitakere and Angela Boswell. Bianca also won the Youth Girls National Champion title ahead of Angela and Kerrie Churchill.

This was an excellent tournament, conducted in great spirits by all bowlers. These bowlers are already looking forward to the next Junior/Youth National Champs, to be held at Tenpin Takapuna in Auckland, on October 4-6, 2010.

National Bowling Tour
The National Bowling Tour continued its journey around the country over the weekend of August 14-16, this time stopping in at Tenpin 13th Ave, Tauranga. Tauranga is renowned for its dry lanes and high scores, and whilst the oil pattern at the weekend was longer than usual and some bowlers failed to adjust to this properly, the normal Tauranga traits soon showed up with some big scores being bowled.
In the qualifying, Pete Richardson stunned the Mens field on Friday afternoon with a 1374 series (229 average) and was never headed. However Sonny Reguerra, Adrian Judd and James Kelly all also beat the 1300 mark (216 average), which is very rare. Ron Morgan also surprised everybody in the Seniors division, by bowling a 1317 series (219 average), ahead of Phil Wright and Graham Parkins.

Glennis Rolton topped the qualifying in the Ladies division with a 1286 series (214 average) ahead of Bianca Tofilau and Angela Boswell, both youth bowlers now taking on the ladies. Paul Housham topped the youth division with a 1274 series (212 average) ahead of, you guessed it, Bianca Tofilau and Angela Boswell.
In the Masters events, James Kelly set the pace for most of the masters, with an average hovering around the 230 mark. However his pace dropped at the end, and allowed Russell Young to charge through the pack and pip him at the post. Both bowlers finished with averages in excess of 220, which is exceptional over 13 games. Young Paul Housham finished 3rd, with a very respectable 214 average. In the Seniors, Graham Parkins adopted a steady as she goes approach, keeping an average around the 200 mark, which was enough to hold off challenges from Ron Morgan and Chan Harris.

In the Ladies, Melonie Lister got out of the starting blocks at lightning speed, bowling a 266 game to start and stayed in front till the end, maintaining a 213 average over the 9 games. Bianca Tofilau finished 2nd on a 207 average and Julieanne Mollet finished 3rd with a 205 average. In the youth division, Paul Housham showed no fatique from his efforts in the Mens masters, and continued to bowl a 203 average to win his 3rd consecutive Youth National Tour event in a row. William Wells finished 2nd with a highly creditable 192 average and Blake Brooks finished 3rd with a 190 average.

Jim McNamara also opened his qualifying attempt with the tournament high game of 286.

All in all it was a fantastic tournament, conducted in excellent spirit by all involved.

Full results can be found here. The next stop for the tour is at Lincoln Road, on September 18-20. The entry form for this stop can be found here.

High Performance Manager

It is with regret that we must announce that due to personal reasons Adrian Judd has resigned from his position as High Performance Manager of TBNZ effective immediately. Adrian has made a valuable contribution to TBNZ over the last 18 months and will be sorely missed. Adrian will be continuing in his role as National Adult Squad Coach. Accordingly TBNZ is seeking a new volunteer for the position for High Performance Manager. The successful applicant will be entitled to receive an honoraria if they choose.

Anyone wishing to apply should review the job description, complete the application form and return it to Craig Nevatt (craig@tbnz.co.nz).

Applications for the position close on 31 August 2009.

Women’s World Championships Updates

View the finals online here

Fourth Update

Friday saw the ladies bowl the first bock of trios on med oil. Megan, Jennifer and Ivena were first up in the morning bowling a 1632 series between them. Annabelle, Nhung and Belinda were next bowling a 1505. Spare shooting was the key, the girls struggling on the conditions. The next day the order was reserved, some improvements all round, the highlight Belinda’s 1200 plus series over the 2 days.

The last event of the tournament was 5 person teams, Megan, Annabelle, Nhung, Jennifer and Belinda bowled together for the entire day while Ivena bowled in a mixed team with 4 other bowlers from different countries.

A mixed bag all round, again spares were the key which let the girls down in most games. Across the centre there were some high team scores bowled with Korea bowling 450 plus over the card with team USA close behind, Korea eventually beating USA in the final.

The Masters were contested on the Sunday, results on the website. The banquet will end the proceedings on Sunday night here with the team returning to New Zealand on Monday.

Third Update
The opening ceremony was held on Monday after the official practice with Kevin Dornberger the president of WTBA bowling the first ceremonial ball down the lanes, the entertainment consisted of a performance from Elvis Priestley and Cher or close to them as possible.

The first day of competition the girls competed in the singles, a mixed bag all round, the highlight, Jennifer Edwards bagging out in the last game to reach 1201 over 6 games. A few of the girls are currently carrying injuries, working through this.

Doubles was next bowled on med oil, some of the girls finding the transition hard form the day before but most came right in the end. Consistency is the biggest key here, no room for error, the lanes are holding up but miss your target and you are history, which a lot of players are finding. The highlight for the day, Megan’s 257 game and 1237 series.

Currently the Nevada state is going through a heat wave; temperatures are ranging between 41-45 degrees so all of us are keeping out of the heat.

New Zealand has 3 supporters with us that traveled with the team along with 2 kiwis that are currently here on holiday so I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support.

Second Update

Unofficial and Official practice has now been bowled; all the girls seem to be comfortable on both patterns, now the business end of the trip starts.

First Update
All arrived safe and sound in Las Vegas, small hiccup with Megan’s luggage as one of her bags was delayed in LA, got it back 2 days later minus one of her World Champs shirts.

Temperature ranging from 35-40 degrees, hotel comfortable and now all adjusted to the new time zone. All times mentioned in updates will be at US time, 19 hours behind NZ. The girls have now completed teams, doubles and singles in the USBC Open. Teams were bowled on Wed the 23rd total score 2581. The following day the team bowled doubles and singles consecutively, highlights were Belinda’s 646 series in the singles with a 253 game, which earned her an instant gold medal and certificate. Ivena bowled a 610 series in the doubles and Jennifer Edwards 591 in the singles all 3 earning prize money for their efforts.

See Team Results here.

Had a surprise visit from PBA bowler Tim Mack on Sat, autographs and photos were sought. A lot of the PBA bowlers are currently here and staying in the hotel for the next 3 days before they prepare and bowl for the world series of bowling, a small bonus for all.

Team building exercise on Saturday was flying over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter a spectacular experience for all. The team will be bowling their un-official practice at 1pm on Sunday followed by official practice at 4pm on Mon with the opening ceremony directly after practice, times and dates for their events will be announced on Mon.

National Bowling Tour Stop 4 – Bowlarama Newtown

The 4th stop of the 2009 National Tour was held over the weekend of July 17-19 at Bowlarama Newtown, Wellington. Just like the VIA classic in June, the lane conditions proved to be challenging, in different ways from what could be guessed from the lane charts provided. Those bowlers who were quickest at making the correct adjustment decisions proved successful.

Paul Housham set the pace in the mens division in the first squad, bowling a 220 average for a total of 1323, and was never headed. Dave Warwick and Kurt Sturgess came close with 217 and 213 averages respectively. Bianca Tofilau also set the pace in the youth division in the first squad with 1256 (209 average), and also held on to top spot through qualifying ahead of Paul Housham (185 average) and Stephanie George (178 average). Qualifying was much tighter in the ladies division with Ivena Heald eventually prevailing with a total of 1147 (191 average) ahead of Bianca Tofilau (188 average) and Stephanie George (182 average). Chan Harris topped qualifying in the seniors division with 1181 (196 average), ahead of Wayne Booth (191 average) and Allan Heald (190 average).

In the masters, Adrian Judd proved why he is currently the best bowler in the country, overcoming a slow start to blitz the mens masters field with an average of 223 and winning by 111 pins from Carl Mollet and 134 pins ahead of Gregorio Nicolas in 3rd place. Ivena Heald prevailed in the Ladies masters with a 188 average, 58 pins ahead of Bianca Tofilau in 2nd and 73 pins ahead of Annabelle Swain in 3rd. In the Seniors division, Roger Tucker prevailed with a 200 average, 51 pins ahead of Chan Harris and 143 pins ahead of Allan Heald in 3rd place. In the Youth Division, Paul Housham proved too good for the rest of the field, finishing with a 198 average, 152 pins ahead of Stephanie George and 248 pins ahead of William Wells.

VIA ELITE CLASSIC

The Inaugural VIA Elite Classic was held at Bowlarama Newtown in Wellington from June 19-21, and attracted bowlers from all over the North Island, and 1 from Christchurch. This was a long format elite level event, with 16 games of qualifying over 2 days, followed by 9 games of matchplay for the top 10 bowlers leading into the top 3 stepladder final. All this was done over 3 different oil patterns.

Day 1 on the long pattern (45 feet) was interesting to say the least, with those bowlers expecting this condition to play similar to the long pattern at the NTC in Christchurch at Easter being given a rude shock. Quick decisions on choice of ball, line and technique were required to succeed. Jason Waters proved to be most adept at doing this, and jumped out to a huge lead by game 4. At the end of the day Jason had eased off the pace a bit, but still held a 217 average, ahead of Graeme Finn from Wellington on 211 and Sonny Reguerra from Auckland on a 206 average.

Day 2 on the short pattern (36 feet) was a relief to those who had struggled on Day 1, but was still challenging in it’s own right. Again, those bowlers who were able to make quick decisions were the bowlers who succeeded. James Kelly from Auckland stormed to the lead, firing a 227 average on the day to finish with an overall qualifying average of 216. Graeme Finn kept up his pace from day 1 to maintain 2nd place with a 214 average whilst Jason Waters held on for 3rd place on a 205 average. The top 10 bowlers overall moved on to the matchplay.

Day 3 on the medium pattern (37 feet) was matchplay day. Pinfall carried forward from the qualifying, so the bowlers in the top 3 had a head start. But they did not take advantage of this head start, this time it was Kurt Sturgess from Christchurch who stormed to the lead from 6th place, bowling a 220 average and winning all 9 games. Adrian Judd also bowled incredibly well, bowling a 217 average to charge from 10th place to 3rd in the space of 9 games, and sneak into the stepladder by 3 pins ahead of Jason Waters. James Kelly maintained a good pace to hold on to 2nd place.

On to the stepladder final between the top 3 qualifiers, with top seed having the right to re-challenge if he/she lost their first game.

Game 1 in the stepladder was between James Kelly and Adrian Judd. Adrian showed his greater experience in clutch situations by staying clean early on when James made some nervous mistakes, and then charged on to a 235-184 victory.

Game 2 was between Kurt Sturgess and Adrian Judd, with Adrian having to win twice to win the title, Kurt only needed to win once. Adrian showed his familiarity with the lanes from game 1 and shot out to a big lead whilst Kurt was tuning in his radar, and cruised to a 242-213 victory to take the tournament to a deciding game.

Game 3 was the decider, no excuses this time. And this game proved to be the real battle that a final should be, with the lead switching hands several times, but neither bowler ever led by more than 15 pins at any point in the match, and nobody made any major mistakes. In the end it came down to the 10th frame, Kurt struck and spared, which meant Adrian needed to strike twice and take 6 pins on the fill ball. Unfortunately Adrian’s first ball went wide to the right to take 7 pins, and Kurt had his win. Adrian spared and struck to finish the game, but it wasn’t enough with Kurt winning 228 to 224.

Overall the tournament was a great success, everybody enjoyed themselves and had lots of fun. Thanks to Bowlarama Newtown for hosting the event, and to VIA bowling products for sponsoring some great prizes. We all look forward to next year’s tournament.

2009 TBNZ National Championships.

Unforgiving! That was the theme at this years National Tenpin Bowling Championships held at Tenpin Lincoln Road, Auckland. The lane conditions proved to be very challenging for most bowlers and averages reflected this as the tournament progressed over Queens Birthday weekend.

Numbers were down in comparison from last year but bowlers from all over New Zealand and Australia still enjoyed the competition as they competed in teams, doubles and singles in both graded and open divisions all culminating with the masters on the Monday of Queens Birthday weekend, full results below.

In brief the Masters on Monday was a close affair in most divisions and the National Champions were not decided until the last few games of the Masters.

The men’s division was first up with the top 16 bowlers competing in 15 head to head games. Taking out the title as National Champion was Tony Lum, his first, with Adrian Judd and Australian bowler Laurie Hill finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.

National Bowling Tour - Stop 3
Wind, rain and delayed flights didn’t stop bowlers travelling and competing in the National Bowling Tour held at Strike Porirua. This was the 3rd round of the National Tour for 2009 and bowlers found the conditions favorable where accuracy and speed was the key. With some divisions down on entries the tournament was well supported by the local bowlers.
Terry Mustchin, Julieanne Mollet, Delfin De Guzman and Paul Housham were the top qualifiers from their respective divisions. The masters on Sunday was kicked off by the men’s and seniors divisions which proved to be interesting as the conditions changed quickly and bowlers who used a straighter line dominated the field. Men’s highest qualifier Terry Mustchin held the lead for most of the masters and managed to hold off a late charge from Adrian Judd winning the men’s division. A very close finish in the seniors division saw Chan Harris take out victory just 2 pins ahead of Phil Wright.
The ladies and youth division was next with the highest qualifier from the youth division Paul Housham taking out first place ahead of Cameron Porter. Local bowler and world championship representative Ivena Heald took out the ladies division ahead of Julieanne Mollett. See full results here

INNOVATIVE AUSSIE REVOLUTIONISES BOWLING

Aussie superstar, Jason Belmonte, posted a further career success by winning the highly competitive SUPER SIXXXXXX GOTEBORG 2009 tournament in Sweden last weekend. However, the thrilling win, against some of the sport’s top classed bowlers, was eclipsed overnight by the announcement from the Professional Bowling Association naming “Belmo” as PBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR.

Although playing just nine events, less than half the schedule, on the American Pro tour during the 08/09 season it’s reported that Belmonte won the poll by a landslide. “He led rookies in money earned and points, so he was pretty darn good”, understated Sports Editor of Indiana’s Post Tribune, Steve Gorches.

Belmonte became the first two-handed player in PBA history to win a PBA Tour title when he upset top qualifier Michael Fagan in March to win The Bowling Foundation Long Island Classic in New York. The win capped a spectacular start to the 25 year-old’s tilt at the Pro circuit and fanned a frenzy of media and public interest in his ‘footy-pass’ bowling style, with appearances on ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today Show and The Fox Network’s Fox & Friends. He has also featured in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, ESPN The Magazine, Denver Post, Boston Globe, ESPN.com and other international media, while the sport’s ‘bible’, BOWLERS JOURNAL INTERNATIONAL will headline Belmo with a front cover feature article in its next monthly edition.

ESPN’s E:60 program, which combines investigative reporting with in-depth profiles of sports personalities, featured Belmonte’s tenpin technique when it aired in the US last night, with host Jeremy Schaap introducing the segment as follows:-

“In the tradition of great sports innovators like Dick Fosbury, who revolutionized the high jump, and Bill Walsh, inventor of football’s West Coast offense, a 25-year-old Australian named Jason Belmonte is taking the bowling world by storm with a revolutionary technique in which he bowls using both hands. Belmonte is challenging his sport's history and redefining what it means to be a bowler …. Belmonte’s two-handed bowling is now spreading to all corners of the globe.”

The segment can be viewed here.

After further tournaments in Sweden and Denmark, Belmonte will return to Australia in early June to a hero’s welcome from the bowling fraternity and family and friends in his home city of Orange, New South Wales. A hectic schedule of tournament commitments and media appearances will soon see the globe-trotting star packing his bags again to compete in and further popularise the sport in which he excels.

2009 National Team Championships

The 2009 National Team Championships were held in the South Island for the first time this year and AMF Garden City Bowl played host to the tournament. Nine regions were represented along with a south island invitational team to contest the coveted title of top men’s and women’s team and overall team champions.

The tournament was held over three days on long and short oil conditions, which challenged bowlers of all levels. By the end of the first day of competition all titles were up for grabs, a lot of bowlers finding the conditions difficult. The end of the second day saw last years Champions Waitakere slowly pulling a head in the overall title stakes but the ladies and the men’s divisions were still in the balance. It was clear that by half way through the third and last day of competition Waitakere were going to take out the overall title for the third year in a row, Wellington and Auckland eventually taking out 2nd and 3rd respectively. The women from Waitakere was also making it clear to the rest of the field that they were the ones to beat and in the end no one could catch them thus taking the women’s division out for the third time in a row as well, with the Wellington ladies finished in 2nd followed by Kaimai in 3rd.

However the men’s division was a different story and going into the last three games only 3 points in total separated the top three teams, Waitakere, Counties Manukau and Auckland, in that order. The lead changed going into the last game after Auckland beat Waitakere and took the lead by just one point. It all came down to the last 3 frames of the last game before the title was decided. After four years of domination in the men’s division Waitakere’s reign was over with Auckland taking out the title by just one point, Counties Manukau finishing in third place.

2009 National Bowling Tour- Stop 2

The second round of the National Bowling tour kicked off on Friday night the 20th of March at AMF Panmure , Auckland. Qualifying based on 6 games went through to Saturday with four divisions fighting it out for the right to bowl in the masters on the Sunday. Consistent lane conditions produced some high scoring with a 200 average a common occurrence. Anthony Harris, men’s, Megan Fletcher, women’s, Fred Housham, seniors and Mathew Toi, youth, all finished on top of their respective divisions.

The men’s and seniors were first up on Sunday competing in the Masters where the top qualifier from the seniors division Fred Housham finished on top with Phil Wright and Alain Cossardeaux finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The men’s division produced high scores across the centre with Adrian Judd finishing on a 226 ave and comfortably taking out the men’s division, David Davies and Pete Richardson coming in 2nd and 3rd.

After a small break for lane conditioning the ladies and youth divisions were up next. Young William Wells held off Corey Johnson and Angela Boswell winning the youth division, his first major title.

Melonie Lister bowled an impressive 217 ave through out the masters taking out top spot ahead of Bianca Tofilau and Megan Fletcher. Next National Bowling Tour event Porirua, May15-17.

2009 World Cup New Zealand Finals

Two weeks of qualifying produced 24 of New Zealand’s top bowlers to contest the New Zealand World Cup final this weekend at Tenpin Lincoln Road, Auckland.
Two different lane conditions challenged the bowlers on the first day of the finals which proved to be chalk and cheese for some them.

The first block of 8 games were bowled on a long oil condition which produced some high scoring. 297 was the highest game bowled by Pete Richardson who finished on top with a 226 average. Then came the second block on a short oil pattern which proved to be a lot tougher than what some expected. Consistency paid off in this block and at the end of another 8 games, the top 16 bowlers were found to contest the masters on Sunday. Local bowler Clinton Beacham finished on top just 1 pin ahead of Craig Nevatt.

13 men and 3 women will bowl on Sunday to find just one male and female to representative New Zealand at this year’s Bowling World Cup.

The World Cup matchplay finals got off to a slow start on Sunday for most bowlers, a third and medium oiling pattern greeted them and as the lanes opened up so did the scores. With a 30 point bonus for a win the finals were always going to be close for those who managed to stay within striking distance of the top.

Last years defending champion Belinda Tan maintained the lead from Mel Lister and Julieanne Mollett through out the day taking out the title for the second year in a row.

The mens title was a hard fought one which in the end came down to the last game between 3 bowlers. With an overall lead of 63 pins going into the last game it was never guaranteed but in the end local bowler Sonny Reguerra managed to hold off Christchurch's Kurt Sturgess taking out his first NZ World Cup Title, with Craig Nevatt finishing in third.

Both Belinda and Sonny will represent New Zealand at the International World Cup Final
in Melaka, Malaysia, from November 14-21. AMF announcement here

2009 National Bowling Tour- Stop 1

The first of 8 National Bowling Tour Tournaments kicked off this weekend at Superstrike Manukau. Qualifying for the masters proved to be a tough ask for bowlers as lane conditions were very challenging and ever changing. This was reflected as only 3 bowlers managed a 200 plus average over the 4 divisions, a vast difference from last year’s event.

David Davies, Sandy Hoare, Chan Harris and Blake Brooks were the top qualifiers for their respective divisions, youth bowler Blake Brooks bowling the highest average of 205 over 6 games.

The Masters proved to be a completely different story as far as lane conditions was concerned with the scores reflecting this. First up were the seniors and men’s divisions with Chan Harris taking out the seniors with a convincing win, 137 pins ahead of 2nd place Macca Manawaiti, with Benny Benseman finishing in 3rd position.

In the men’s division Russell Young finished on top, his first individual win of his bowling career. Craig Nevatt snuck ahead of last years winner Adrian Judd by just 3 pins in the last game to take out 2nd place, Judd finishing 3rd.

In the youth division young Mathew Toi bowled an impressive 204 average, finishing 176 pins ahead of 2nd place and highest qualifier Blake Brooks with Ethan McKay finishing in 3rd.

In the women’s division last years defending champion Bianca Tofilau was too strong in the end and finished on top, ahead of Belinda Tan and Melonie Lister.
